Do you have friends who are microbiologists, evolutionary geneticists or developmental biologists? Or simply science geeks? They will LOVE this cute plush Giant Microbes Waterbear. Or if YOU are the science geek, why not treat yourself or a little one to this unique cuddly toy.
This plush replica of Hypsibius dujardini is one million times its actual size. In reality, the water-dwelling, segmented microbe is so small (0.5-1.5 mm long) it is best viewed under a microscope. Hypsibius dujardini is a tardigrade (Latin for ‘slow stepper’); this little fella ambles along on eight tiny legs.
This waerbear has been around for over 500 million years and has been identified in mountains, the Antarctic and deep in the ocean. The waterbear’s alternative name is ‘moss piglet’ as they are also found in miniature rainforests created by moss.
These hardy little herbivores go into a form of super-hibernation for several decades before re-emerging. Their metabolism becomes inactive and they can survive both boiling water and sub-freezing temperatures!
